Beware One-Stop Shopping For Online Marketing Help For Your Business

Marketing a business online can mean a lot of things because there’s are lots of ways to do it.

  • Content Marketing: which means information you deliver on your website which makes your site valuable to readers (and viewers in the case of video) and also gets the attention of the search engines.
  • Blogging: which is an extension of content marketing.  Blogging is like adding more content to your website continually, as this article is adding informational content.  Blogging can also include adding content to someone else’s blog.  This is called “guest blogging” and a very smart tactic.
  • Video Marketing: Leveraging YouTube or any other video site (YouTube is most important to any marketing effort) is powerful because it combines a social element to the 2nd most powerful search engine behind Google which is YouTube.
  • Social Media Marketing: which is establishing, maintaining and being socially active on social sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and others.
  • Search Engine Optimization: which covers several aspects of on online presence including keywords, key phrases, onsite content, website development style, multiple websites, black links and other strategies which can be done outside your own online properties.
  • Pay-Per-Click: which means having a link to your website on other high-traffic websites (like Google) which you pay for only when someone clicks the link.
  • Banner Ads: Having a link to your website which you pay for, usually on a monthly basis as you would a print ad.

The list goes on but the idea I’m trying to explain is, I would be very leery of firms with pretty websites who market themselves as a “one-stop shop” for internet marketing services.  It’s very difficult to do all these things right.  You know the old saying: “Jack of all trades-master of none”.

In my real-world online marketing experience, I learned ONE aspect of driving attention to my business which paid off.  Then I learned another, and another.   Each one of these took my business to a new level.  At a certain point, they start working together and the synergy between them takes you to yet another level. You don’t need to do it all and you certainly don’t need to do it all at once.

In my free online marketing consultation, I will learn about your business, your current status and overall online presence so I can make a set of practical recommendations which will put you on a path to a positive return on your marketing investments, change your business and your life.

Advice For Creating Website Page Content (for business owners)

Good website page content

Good web page content is a combination of information for people and information for search engines.  While that may seem obvious, I see so many website which break this rule…more often than not.

To make page content people-friendly, it needs to follow a few simple rules:

how to write for search engine optimization
You expect me to read all this? I’m outta here!

  • Text should be dark and the background should be light.  Black or dark gray on white is ideal.  If you want the information on your site to be consumed and understood, there’s nothing like black on white for easy readability and therefore, attention and comprehension.
  • Text should be of a sufficient size. I see it all the time-tiny font sizes. Why?  Why make it difficult to read?  It’s nuts.
  • Pages should have headlines.  It’s somewhat of a reinforcement of the navigation title of the page.  It’s also good style and a very important search engine optimization tactic.
  • There should be one main idea on a web page and ind in most cases there should be no more information than will fit without scrolling.  A couple paragraphs of 2 or 3 sentences each is enough and sentences should be short.

People have extremely short attention spans governed by a built-in bullshit meter so avoid trite cliches.  Speak about your audience, not yourself or your company.  What is it that your target prospect ideally wants from a business like yours and tell them how they get it without sounding like a commercial.

Keep in mind, your visitor has most likely come to your website for information on the path to making a decision.  Visitors aren’t going online for marketing messages so your marketing must be subtle and information-rich.

To make your page content search engine-friendly, it needs to follow a few simple rules:

  • The headline should have a keyword-rich phrase.  This is where you need the assistance of Google’s keyword search tool.  Find out what kinds of words and phrases are being used to search for a business like yours.  This is invaluable.
  • Having one main idea per page is vital.  This gives the search engines only one thing to decide: is this information relevant enough to be worthy of page-1 search results?  When more than one idea is shared on a page, then there simply isn’t a main idea.  There are multiple ideas.  It’s smarter to save other ideas for other pages.  When you have one main idea per page, your 2 paragraphs of 2-3 sentences each can have ample keywords and phrases and be communicating with both people and search engines simultaneously.
  • Using internal links is an effective website strategy.  You use internal links to refer people to other pages of your website.  I just said you want only one main idea per web page.  But one idea often relates to another or transitions to another.  You use an internal link to refer your visitor to another page which is a natural transition or reference to another page on your site which ties one idea to another.  You may want to use links to refer people from one blog post to a previous blog post or from a blog post to a main page on your website.

This is not complicated stuff.  I’m not writing this for website developers.  I’m writing this for business owners who can now return to your website and see where your website is falling short in these areas.  This is not complicated.  This is not technical in any way.  If you’ve read it, you understand it.  So implement it and make your website better for your visitors and customers and better for the search engines to determine your website is worthy of higher search results.

How To Attract Attention To Your Business With Celebrity

Attract attention to your business, leverage the power of celebrity to get people to pay attention.

internet marketing, using celebrity in marketing
Me & hockey legend (and friend) Bobby Clarke on the golf course

There’s a worldwide fascination with people in the public eye.  Ever been to a restaurant or even a simple sandwich shop and they have photographs all over the walls taken inside the place with celebrities who have been there?  It’s interesting and intriguing.  Now you know, “if Elvis has been there, it’s good enough for me!”

Advertisements have long included celebrities and celebrity endorsements.  But you don’t even need an endorsement, mere association can do the trick.

Just a simple photo of you with the celebrity creates fascination so the viewer has an internal desire to know more and consumes any information you have to add.  Association to a celebrity gives YOU a bit of celebrity too, further elevating the interest level of any message you have to give both now and in the future.

In this photo, I’m standing along side of Professional Hockey Hall Of Famer and Philadelphia Flyers icon, Bobby Clarke.  W’ere on the 18th tee at Merchantville Country Club. The 2 of us part of a foursome with a couple other friends.  The reason I’m there playing golf on a Tuesday with friends is because I can.  I have built my businesses around learning how to successfully market them online and it’s given me the freedom to work my own hours as well as play my own hours.

Don’t get me wrong…I still work…a lot.  But I have the freedom to work when I want to so I seldom miss anything I want to do.  It’s a great way to live.  I’m not telling you this to show off.  I’m telling you this because when you learn how to use the internet to get more customers, clients or patience and to get those customers, clients or patients to buy more and do it more often, you can make more money and achieve a greater level of freedom at the same time.

So if you have the opportunity to create an association between yourself or your business and a celebrity, leverage it to your benefit.  Also consider hiring a celebrity to appear in an ad or interview with you.  Study using celebrity in your marketing.  It’s a powerful way to attract attention and deliver your message.

3 Ways To Increase Sales & Profits

Determine to work on these 3 things and your business will become unstoppable.

True entrepreneurs work ON their businesses more than IN them. Their focus falls into each of the following 3 areas:

The definition of entrepreneur
Think and act like an entrepreneur. Work ON your business more than working IN your business

1. Getting New Customers.

A sound business always needs to maintain a deliberate effort in attracting new customers.  All other variables remaining normal, more customers will automatically translate into more dollars.  A referral strategy, advertising, and a good website which collects contact information from visitors are important tactics to have running on a continuing basis to keep new faces coming in to your business.

2. Increase Transaction Size.

Every business can calculate the average transaction size and hopefully can measure the average lifetime spend of a repeat customer.  Every entrepreneur’s job is to find ways

to increase these averages.  Up sells, cross-sells, incentives, point-of-sale displays, and introducing new items are some examples.  When you deliberately increase the average size of the sale and are also increasing your customer base (refer to #1), your business will grow dramatically.

3. Increased Frequency.

Create incentives for getting your customers back more frequently.  You see lots of different kinds of businesses doing this.  Sometimes referred to as a  bounce-back campaign, it can be as simple as  “10% off your next visit” with an expiration date on the back of your business card. By working on ways to keep your current customers coming back more often,  just one more time each month or even once more each year can be huge.

Combine all 3 tactics and  your results can be exponential.

How To Satisfy Google – Important SEO Advice

How to satisfy the Google GodsGoogle’s #1 priority is to be the web’s best resource for delivering quality search results. That’s why it’s the world’s #1 online destination. If people become unsatisfied with their search results too many times, they will abandon Google for another alternative. Google is constantly taking measures to fine tune how they analyse online content in order not to reward the most aggressive search engine optimization processes but rather reward the most sincere and the most valuable information.

Even in cyberspace natural law rules. In this case, slow and steady wins the race.

Unnaturally pumping content onto a website and creating weak and meaningless links with other sites (which was once a formidable tactic) you are now diminishing your chances of success. SEO firms out there are still promoting and performing this strategy. Hiring an outside firm using these techniques will cost you money and could also cost you your position on search engine results.

Who is your audience?

To be effective, your website needs to communicate with both your audience and the search engines. The search engines are in a constant state of learning. When they learn your website has got content to match the criteria in legitimate searches, you will be rewarded with high-end results. If they determine your website is unnaturally stuffed with keywords with the specific intent to gain the attention of the search engines, it will be ignored.

By speaking to your audience, by delivering valuable and worthwhile information your site will accomplish these 3 powerful things:

  • You will be creating natural search engine optimization by speaking the peoples’ language.  The language you use in speaking to your optimal audience will generally be the same or very close to the same as how the audience is engaging their online search, with words, terms and phrases.  For example: try searching: “is hot sauce healthy?”  Look at the search results and understand why Google chose them.  This exercise will show you how and where these words were used naturally in content and evaluated by Google, then determined worthy of showing in search results.
  • You will be increasing the amount of time visitors spend on your website.  This is really important because one of the factors the search engines consider in evaluating a website’s value is seeing that it’s engaging to those who visit it.  It means people found what they were looking for and spent time reading it.  That’s feedback for the search engines.  It says, “This is worthy to show again in the same or a similar search”.
  • It’s sharable.  Social media plays an ever-increasing role in the world and therefore search results.  When a web page is shared in social media, it’s a like a seal of approval and the search engines are trained to know this.

Get Google’s Seal Of Approval

How to get Googles attention, SEO
Get higher search results by delivering valuable information

Google is taking every possible measure to prevent Black Hat tactics from being effective.  The internet is still “the information superhighway” and having real information people are looking for is the way to get Google’s Seal Of Approval.  If you don’t have the ability to write your own content for your web pages and blog posts, by reading this article you are now educated enough to know “gaming the system” could hurt your business.  You should also now be educated enough to know how publishing valuable information is good for your website, your business and for higher search engine results.

Imagine your website providing 50 or more relevant articles of interest in a year, each one representing a new page on your website.  Your website would grow to over 50 pages.  In a world where the average business website is 6 pages, you would be building a Rock-Solid Online Presence unlike most others in your field.  What would a few extra clients mean to your business?  It could be transformational.  I know…it happened for me!
